Sean O’Toole is a writer and editor based in Cape Town, South Africa. A contributing editor to Frieze magazine and regular contributor to Artforum, his recent writing projects include essays for monographs by Kenyan painter Michael Armitage and South African artist William Kentridge, as well as a theoretical text for the exhibition Alpha Crucis: Contemporary African Art at Astrup Fearnley Museum in Oslo, Norway. He has published one book of fiction, The Marquis of Mooikloof and Other Stories (2006), and edited three volumes of essays, including The Journey: New African Photography (2019). Together with painter Zander Blom, he founded The Bad Reviews, an art-nonsense-music project showcased at the 2019 Felix LA Art Fair. His new chapbook from Extemporary Press is titled The Magic of Stones.
